Inspired by the styles of the early 1940s, these practical day bags combine a useful size with a functional utilitarian shape and military detailing popular during the war years. View 1 has a pointed flap and tab closure while View 2 has a pieced flap and is trimmed with vintage buttons on the flap and handle, adding to the retro appeal.
Finished bag dimensions:
10” (26cm) tall by 14” (36cm) wide and 5” (13cm) at the base
Materials needed:
For View 1 you will need:
· ½ yd (50cm) of 44” (115cm) wide or 1/3 yard of 54” (140cm) wide fabric 1
· ½ yd (50cm) of 44” (115cm) wide or 1/3 yard of 54” (140cm) wide fabric 2
· ½ yd (50cm) of 44” (115cm) wide lining fabric
· ½ yd (50cm) of 44” (115cm) wide firm sew-in interfacing (and of optional batting)
· ½ yd (50cm) of 36” (92cm) wide fusible interfacing (for flap, tab and handle)
For View 2 you will need:
· 1/3 yd (35cm) of 44” (115cm) wide or 54” (140cm) wide fabric 1
· 1/3 yd (35cm) of 44” (115cm) or 54” (140cm) wide fabric 2
· 1/3 yd (35cm) of 44” (115cm) or 54” (140cm) wide fabric 3
· ½ yd (50cm) of 36” (92cm) wide fusible interfacing (for flap and handle)
For both views:
· Plastic canvas or similar 10¼” x 4½” (26 x 11½cm) for bag base
· 1 metal ring 1½” (38mm) diameter for handle
· 2 or 3 vintage buttons 1¼” (32mm) diameter approx
· 1 magnetic snap set
